Detective Kristen Hearne Murdered
Polk County, GA – Polk County Police Detective Kristen Hearne, age 29, was shot and killed during an investigation of a stolen vehicle on Friday, September 29.
Seth Brandon Spangler, the suspect who shot and killed Detective Hearne on Friday morning, was arrested about 2:46 PM after an intense manhunt. He is in jail under no bond, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A female suspect, Samantha Roofis also in custody.
The incident occurred about 11 AM on Friday, September 29, in the area of 123 Santa Clause Road in Cedartown during an investigation of a stolen vehicle.
Polk County Police Officer Goodrich was dispatched to the incident, and Detective Hearne responded as his back-up.
While the two officers were on scene, Spangler and roof came out of the woods and “acted suspicious” according to Police County Police Chief Kenny Dodd. At some point, Spangler pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting both officers.
Officer Goodrich was shot in his ballistic vest during the incident.
Detective Hearne was not wearing a ballistic vest at the time she was shot. It’s common for detectives not to wear body armor if they don’t anticipate contacting suspect.
Herne’s mother spoke of her daughter saying, “I was diagnosed with cancer April 24. My daughter was right there beside me all the way even after I came home … she still helped me and still took care of me. That’s the type of person she was.”
Detective Hearne is survived by her husband and three-year-old daughter.
