Cobb County Chief Mike Register Fires Lt. Greg Abbott
Marietta, GA – Cobb County Chief Mike Register announced at a press conference on Thursday that Lt. Greg Abbott would be fired for a snarky comment that he made on at traffic stop in July 2016 (video below.)
“I have known Lt. (Greg) Abbott for years and perceived him as honorable, but he’s made a mistake,” Chief Mike Register said, according to AJC. “I don’t know what is in his heart, but I know what came out of his mouth. We recommend that he be terminated and we are moving forward on that.”
Now this Lieutenant, with a track record of 28 years of honorable service, is losing his job over the joke.
Cobb County Police Lt. Greg Abbott asked the passenger during a traffic stop in July 2016 to grab her cell phone and she told him she was afraid to move her hands since she’s seen so many videos of police shootings.
In the video the woman said, “No, no, no. I’ve just seen way too many videos of cops …”
The police officer responded, “But you’re not black. Remember, we only shoot black people. Yeah. We only kill black people, right? All the video you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?”
“Right,” the woman said.
“You have,” the officer responded.
An attorney for the driver said she believes the officer’s comments were sarcastic, according to the New York Post. Attorney Suri Chada Jimenez said the officer was being sarcastic because the driver “gave him some lip.”
“It makes you cringe when you hear it,” Jimenez said, according to the New York Post. “It’s unacceptable.”
Lance LoRusso, Abbott’s attorney, told TV station WSB in a statement that Lt. Abbott is cooperating with the investigation and “his comments must be observed in their totality to understand their context.”
“He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest,” said LoRusso.
The anti-police crowd is spinning this as an officer confessing to killing black people.
After seeing the video, it’s pretty absurd to think that anybody would believe that his comment was is a confession to killing black people, but that it what people are claiming.
Make no mistake, what the officer did was wrong. Sarcastic comments like that are rude, and it is inappropriate. In addition, he just gave the anti-police crowd a ton of ammo. A reprimand would have been entirely appropriate. Firing him is extreme.
The only way firing could be justified is if his comments were taken seriously. I can only assume that Chief Register has some sense, which means that he knows that the comment wasn’t serious, and he decided to cater to an angry mob and fire the officer for making the department look bad to people who already hate the police.
Watch the video below and then let us know if you think he should have been fired.
